Some Like It Hot: A Review

I had a thought just after Christmas after reading some stories about Marilyn Monroe. I have never actually watched any of her films, so I had to remedy this. I bought Some Like It Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Seven Year Itch.

I started with Some Like It Hot (1959).
This is the summary from IMDB,

'When two musicians witness a mob hit, they flee the state in an all female band disguised as women, but further complications set in'

I was a bit worried at first because it was black and white as I usually spend the whole film wondering what colour things were (i am so annoying!). Apparently it was in Marilyn Monroe's contract that all her films were to be filmed in colour BUT the make up they used on Tony and Jack's faces turned a shade of green so they had to film it in B&W.

However, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie was!
The plot was great and I found myself laughing A LOT! It was good old school humour! I genuinely had no idea what was going to happen at the end so that's always a good thing!

I found the 'main star', Marilyn Monroe, to be average. Yes, she was drop dead gorgeous and had you hanging on every word she said but she wasn't the star of this film for me. After every film I always go onto imdb and read all the trivia and apparently Marilyn was hard work on this film.
Marilyn Monroe as Sugar

The star of the film for me was 'Daphne' or Jack Lemmon. He was hilarious and had the best storyline and lines to say!

Tony Curtis with Jack Lemmon as Daphne

Doesn't he look like a beautiful woman? He played the role brilliantly! I can't wait to view more movies that he is in. I've actually never heard of him before. I've read up on him and nobody has a bad word to say about him. Just shows you that the media only focus on the bad womaniser type men.

Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as Daphne and Josephine

Tony Curtis was great as well. I thought he suited being a women far too well. I didn't like his storyline as much as I did Jacks, perhaps because Jacks was super funny.

I would highly recommend this film to everyone. It had a great plotline, great actors, funny lines and great clothing (even if it was in black and white).

10/10

Have you seen it? What do you think?
